Writing Samples

Working under Beaverton editors Alex Huntley and Luke Gordon Field, I was a contributing writer to this satire of Canadian history published by Penguin Books. My material focused primarily on World War Two. Collaborating with writers all over Canada gave me invaluable experience working remotely, now sadly essential in these dire times. As a book satirizing Canadian history, research was essential. I consulted news publications, diaries, memoirs, academic texts,  and a variety of other sources to capture the eccentricities and mood of the period. You can find a link to the book's page on Amazon below.

The Beaverton

For the last eight years I have been a frequent contributor to The Beaverton. I am proud to have played a role in growing it from a small comedy site with just 400 Facebook followers to Canada's most prominent satirical publication with over a million unique hits a month. My work has been cited by Canadaland Commons, The Washington Post, and Buzzfeed. My articles have featured frequently at the top of major Canadian subreddits, and have even found their way to the top of Reddit's vaunted front page. My work has frequently been retweeted and shared by well-known pundits and commentators  - but more importantly - from lots of ordinary people as well. You can find a link to my author page below.

As you can tell from my writing and work history, I'm a political animal with a bit of an activist streak. I first became familiar with the Campaign for a 4 Day Week through Twitter. There was no similar movement in Canada, so when I ended up moving to the UK I jumped at the chance to get involved in person. I wrote some short online promotional videos for them, which you can find below. I also write posts and advocate at events on the campaign's behalf

American Marketing Association: Toronto

As a volunteer blog manager for this business association in Toronto, I wrote, edited, and published articles for their blog. I reported on events, sourced images, researched a variety of business topics, and conducted interviews with a variety of academic, entrepreneurs, and experts. I also recruited contributors and edited their work. The experience I gained using Wordpress was invaluable.

Another piece showcasing my business writing chops. I was commissioned to write this on behalf of the Canadian Professional Sales Association. In addition, I wrote an internal report for them about a sales conference to help them find insights on recruiting young people into the industry.

Here's a little short I submitted to a contest about a cat wreaking havoc on a man working from home during the pandemic.
